Why Use a Travel Advisor—and What Does It Cost?

Planning a trip online can look simple. Book a flight, choose a hotel, add a few activities, and you are done. The trouble is that those pieces do not always work well together.

Flight times affect transfers. Hotel location affects how much of the day is spent getting around. Room categories, deposits, cancellation rules, and travel insurance can change the real value of a price.

There is no additional cost to use Harken Travel as your travel advisor. We do not charge clients a planning fee or a booking fee.

What a travel advisor actually does

We start by asking about the trip. Who is traveling? What dates work? What is the budget? What matters most, and where do you need flexibility?

Then we sort through the options and help put the trip together. That may include flights, hotels, resorts, cruises, transfers, tours, insurance, or activities. More importantly, we look at how those pieces fit together.

You still make the decisions. Our job is to give you useful choices and explain the differences without burying you in information.

What does it cost to use Harken Travel?

There is no additional cost to use Harken Travel as your travel advisor. Harken Travel does not add a planning fee or booking fee to the price of your trip.

For many hotels, resorts, cruises, tours, and vacation packages, the travel supplier pays the advisor a commission after the client travels. That commission is generally built into the supplier's public price. It is not a separate charge added to your bill by Harken Travel.

You still pay for the trip itself. Taxes, resort fees, port charges, deposits, optional travel insurance, and other supplier costs may apply. Airlines and other third parties may also charge for items such as seats, baggage, ticketing, changes, or cancellations. If a charge applies, we explain it before you authorize payment.

Why not just book everything online?

You can. Some trips are simple, and sometimes a direct booking is the best choice.

We are not going to tell you that every online price is bad or that every trip must be booked through us. We compare the details, not just the number at the top of the page. If booking directly with a supplier makes more sense, we will tell you.

The value of an advisor is having someone look at the full trip and point out what may not be obvious. A lower price may include a long connection, a poor hotel location, a restrictive cancellation policy, or fewer included services. A slightly higher price may save time or provide flexibility that matters more.

Help when plans change

No advisor can prevent bad weather, airline delays, illness, or a supplier changing its schedule. What we can do is stay familiar with the trip and help you understand the available options.

That matters when one change affects several reservations. Instead of starting over with a different person for every part of the trip, you have someone who already knows what was booked and why.

When an advisor can be most helpful

Travel advisors are especially useful for cruises, international trips, all-inclusive resorts, theme-park vacations, group travel, and trips involving several generations of a family.

We can also help when there are mobility concerns, dietary needs, multiple rooms, tight arrival times, or firm budget limits. Those details are easier to handle before the trip than after something has gone wrong.
